Declining Currency: Indicative of economy slump

November 22nd was a historic day in Indian currency market, INR fell to an all time low against the dollar. The  rate at which Indian rupee is declining is pretty scary for forex investors, and doesn't present a clear picture of the place which is supposedly insulated from rich world's money market.

It is not like that India doesn't had the problem earlier, balance of payments has been haunting our country from the last 2 decades. There's a sense of panic now in the air, as the investors are reluctant to invest in the country which was called the fastest emerging economic superpower. India's high inflation and current account deficit, financed by capital flows makes it a unique case study in the financial jungle.

Jonathan Anderson of UBS has tagged the rupee a "drama queen". Week INR reflects the scenario of the global currency markets especially the eurozone, which has caused the capital inflows to dry up. But Indian economy has its problems too. The current account deficit is likely to overshoot projections of about 3% of GDP for 2011. Indian exports are slowing faster than Imports of the country. Inflation is contributing to the degrowth of the country. The investments are drying up due to high interest rates, souring inflation and governments stubborn approach to reforming public sector.

The falling rupee reflects India's economic failings. But will it help the Indian cause? A cheaper currency would eventually reduce the external deficit, by boosting exports and limiting imports. But a sharp fall will definitely hurt India, as the country has mainly borrowed in other country's money. Here's a twist as well, lower rupee will raise inflation which is already a pain in the neck.

RBI has started its efforts to ease down the pressure on the currency by easing the rules on foreign lending to India, which will attract some funds for infra sector. They also are now intervening in the currency markets and in the past two weeks have sold dollar heavily from their reserves. But these measures are also affecting Indian market locally, as the monetary conditions are tightening and reducing the liquidity from the market.

The country has $314 billion of reserves, largely thanks to RBI intervening in the past to stop the rupee appreciating too much. But that cushion is not as big as it seems. Foreign debts that must be repaid within a year now equal 48% of India’s reserves.

Indian politician now along with bureaucrats have to make some tough decisions and will have to do things which will appease foreign investors. RBI has got some hard thinking and planning to do if they want the economy to function normally and growing at around 8 or 9%.

Gold Loosing Its Sheen!!

For the last two weeks Gold prices have shown some resistant to bullish tendencies. We can safely say Gold has lost some of its sheen and the chances are the trend is gonna continue. For the last 11 years Gold prices have been in rising making it one of the longest winning streaks for the yellow metal.

The year 2011 shows no negative sign with the Gold touching its peak in September. But since then Gold is breaking down in the international market and with many high profile investors selling their positions, it becomes evident Gold is loosing its luster. Billionaire investor George Soros, who called gold "the ultimate bubble," cut his holdings in the SPDR Gold Trust as early as May. Hedge fund manager and long-time gold bull John Paulson held tight for a few months, but eventually slashed his gold holdings by a third during the third quarter.

Sentiments can play a major role in metal market, not every big player in commodity is saying the mood is negative but the data shows that Gold prices have been highly inflated. Platinum, one of the precious metal which is used in many industrial applications is trading at around $1300 which is way below Gold prices. Ideally it should not be trading less than $100 from Gold which is trading at $1700 per ounce.

The bubble burst could bring down Gold to nearly $1300. Now it is not a safe investment for new investors, it has actually become a dangerous one. In 1980 when Gold prices declined, it had lost 60% of the value in a single year.

Gold had been a safe haven for many investors and had given huge returns as well. But now is not the safe time to invest in it as it is not very stable. Daily price swings have turned away many heavy weights from buying Gold from the market. Now its just a matter of time when Gold prices come crashing to the floor and the bubble bursts. Wait for that time and then invest as Gold, as history suggests, will rally again.

Everything is not Merry for Blackberry

RESEARCH IN MOTION is seriously thinking to sell its hardware business.......that means Blackberry. As we all know, the Canadian company has a highly secure network, that means there are number of takers ready to invest heavily on it.

But the bad news for all the members of BB family is that there exclusive services will not remain exclusive. Last four quarters have been really bad for RIM as their sales have been dipping and smartphone market share is also declining rapidly. Their shares are down more than 11 percent to their lowest levels in almost eight years.

RIM top management is delaying the release of new BB devices. That isn't its only problem. The PlayBook, the company's latecomer in the tablet market dominated by Apple's i pad, has been a deflating disappointment, forcing RIM to offer massive discounts on the unloved device. It took a $485 million pre-tax charge for the Playbook, which runs on QNX software that RIM plans to use in its future devices.

Number of shareholders are advising the company's board to sell its handset business and monetize its patent portfolio while retaining the high-margin services business.

RIM's spidery, data-crunching network reaches behind corporate firewalls and taps into mobile networks globally.

The network, unique among handset makers, has been a cornerstone of the BlackBerry's growth - with email and instant messages routed through RIM's own enterprise servers and data centers, where it is encrypted and pushed out to subscribers.

There are no middlemen to intercept corporate or state secrets, or even the flirty chats of teenagers who love the free BlackBerry messaging.

There are lot at stakes for RIM and Blackberry lovers right now. Right now the management is playing the wait and watch game but the next 8 to 12 months will decide the course for BB. Will that be too late.....lets see!!!!
